In the Southeast US, roof stains have become a problem for both home owners and realtors. The gray to black stains are caused by a common algae that roots into the composition of shingles. We have read that around 20 or so years ago, lime began to be used in the manufacture of asphalt shingles and that the fungus feeds off the lime, causing it to spread it’s ugliness and degrade the life of the shingles. You can read more about the fungus, it’s causes and effects by doing a search on the net. No matter the cause or the gritty details, we can safely remove the stain on most roofs. We use a safe cleaner pre-spray and very light wash to remove the stain. The pre-spray can actually be left on the roof and allowed to work on it’s own without the wash if you are patient enough to let rain do the job. We don’t recommend the wash on roofs older than 15 yrs.
CAUTION: Never let any cleaning contractor use chlorine bleach or a solution containing it on your asphalt based shingles. Always ask about cleaning agents before you hire someone to clean your roof!
